Adult Summer Wear-and-Tear: Common Issues We’re Seeing & How to Fix Them
By the end of this month, many of us are feeling the full effects of a busy summer. We’ve been out in the yard, on weekend hikes, traveling, at the pool with the kids, and taking on extra outdoor projects… our bodies have taken on a lot. At Align Chiropractic, we’re hearing the same complaints week after week from adults in the area: tight lower backs, stiff necks, and achy shoulders.
Here are the most common summer activity-related causes for these issues we’re seeing right now, plus specific ways to help you finally start to feel better.
1. Lower Back Tightness from Yard Work and Lifting
Mowing, weeding, mulching, and loading coolers or heavy beach gear all involve repetitive bending and twisting. Over time this can create torque and misalignments in the lower spine and pelvis, leading to stiffness, muscle spasms, or radiating discomfort.
What helps:
Do 10 slow cat-cow stretches on the floor each morning and evening to mobilize the spine
Perform standing hip flexor stretches (hold 30 seconds per side, twice daily) after long periods of bending
Gentle Structural Correction focused on the lumbar spine and pelvis to restore proper alignment and reduce nerve pressure
2. Neck and Shoulder Strain from Travel and Phone Use
Been on any long car rides this summer? How about awkward sleeping positions in hotel beds that just don’t feel like home? How about increased phone time while lounging by the pool or at ball fields? All of these can lock up the upper back and neck. You might notice headaches, tight traps, or more of a forward head posture creeping in.
What helps:
Practice chin tucks (10 repetitions, 3 times a day) while sitting in the car or at stoplights. You can use your finger to gently press your chin into your clavicle until you feel a deep stretch in the back of your neck
Stretch your pectoral muscles by holding the sides of a doorway and pushing your chest forward like you are trying to walk through the door but your arms are pulling you back (hold 20-30 seconds, 2-3 times daily) to open the chest and shoulders
Precise cervical and upper thoracic adjustments to improve mobility and relieve tension headaches
3. Hip and SI Joint Discomfort from Increased Activity
More walking, hiking, biking, and standing at parks or splash pads can irritate the hips and sacroiliac joints, especially if one side gets overused when carrying kids, bags, or sports equipment.
What helps:
Perform figure-4 stretches (hold 30 seconds per side) after activity to target the piriformis and glutes
Use a foam roller or tennis ball on the glute muscles for 1-2 minutes daily
Targeted pelvic and SI joint adjustments to restore stability and smooth walking motion
4. General Fatigue and Tightness
The combination of heat, dehydration, irregular sleep, and higher activity levels can leave the whole body feeling stiff and slow to recover.
What helps:
Drink water with a pinch of sea salt or an electrolyte packet first thing in the morning and after outdoor time. Our favorite electrolytes are ATH - https://www.athsport.co/
Take a 10-15 minute evening walk at a gentle pace to promote circulation and recovery
Full-spine maintenance adjustments to keep the nervous system clear and support faster muscle recovery
Why Addressing These Issues Now Matters
Late summer is the perfect window to reset before fall routines ramp up. Small problems that feel manageable today can quickly turn into bigger issues once school schedules, desk work, and colder weather add more stress to the body.
If you’ve been pushing through any of these aches, or you just feel “off” after a full summer of activity, a gentle evaluation can make a big difference. Patients tell us all the time they wish they had come in sooner!
