Local Outdoor Summer Fun
Summer Outdoor Ideas Near Kings Mountain, Shelby & Gastonia
Summer around here hits different… the days stretch long, the humidity settles in, and suddenly you’re looking for any excuse to get the family out before everyone melts on the couch. Here are some of the spots and activities we keep coming back to that actually feel worth the effort.
Water Play That Saves Hot Days
When the temperature climbs, nothing resets the mood like water.
Patriots Park Splash Pad in Kings Mountain sits right downtown, making it easy to combine with a walk or grab some food nearby.
Lineberger Park in Gastonia is a great all-day option. You get the full pool experience - lazy river, big slide, fountains, zero-depth entry for little ones, plus a splash pad, shaded playgrounds, and big trees that actually provide relief.
Stinger Park in Bessemer City is a newer park that has a fun splash pad for the kids and also plenty of covered picnic table space nearby for mom and dad.
Dallas Park Splash Pad in Dallas stands out because it’s fully fenced, and the splash pad is excellent. That extra boundary brings real peace of mind when kids are darting around, and the park itself has a laid-back feel with other play areas close by.
Parks That Feel Good to Spend Time In
Lineberger Farm is fun for adults and kids of all ages. You can pick your own seasonal produce, learn about farming, and kids can enjoy the playgrounds. The farm store is open seven days a week and filled with homemade baked goods and homegrown treats.
The Kings Mountain Gateway Trail is a must-visit for local Kings Mountain families for the perfect walk or hike. With a good bit of the trail being stroller accessible and beautiful plants and wildlife to see at the “Butterfly Loop,” this one will bring entertainment for all ages.
Events Worth Marking on the Calendar
Movies in the Park at Stowe Park in Belmont is one of those simple pleasures we look forward to. Bring blankets or low chairs, settle in at the pavilion (24 S. Main Street), and enjoy a free movie under the stars. They run multiple nights through the season — check downtownbelmont.org/movies-in-the-park for the exact 2026 lineup.
Gastonia Ghost Peppers games at CaroMont Health Park deliver easy family nights. Keep an eye out for Kids Takeover Night toward the end of July — it’s one of those evenings where the kids get extra run of the place with special activities. Kids can also run the bases after Sunday home games. Full schedule and tickets at ghostpeppersbaseball.com.
A couple of things that help us actually enjoy these outings:
Go earlier in the day or wait until late afternoon when the sun starts to ease up.
Water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, and a portable fan or misting bottle are non-negotiable.
If you’re planning a group thing, look into reserving a shelter ahead of time.
These aren’t flashy destinations, but they’re the kind of reliable, close-to-home spots that turn ordinary summer days into the ones the kids remember. If you’ve got a favorite I missed or a new discovery, I’d love to hear about it.
Here’s to making the most of the warm months while they last.
