Raising An Outdoor Family

An Inside World

Did you know that 90% of the average American’s day is spent indoors? In this day we live in, that may come as no surprise given our dependence as adults on screens and devices of all kinds, however our children are not exempt from this statistic. It is no wonder that approximately 1 in 4 people in the U.S. have vitamin D levels that are too low for bone health and overall health, with nearly two-thirds of Americans having insufficient vitamin D levels. It is also no wonder that clinical depression among adolescents is now impacting 1 in 5 children. Nature and being outside interacting with God’s creations regulates our nervous system, lowers stress, and improves mood.

Free Play Builds the Brain

When outdoor time becomes the default instead of the exception, that’s when everything changes. Children who regularly play outside develop stronger nervous systems and more resilient brains. Free, unstructured outdoor play has been shown in numerous studies to enhance executive function- the mental skills responsible for focus, self-control, and flexible thinking. It stimulates sensory integration, improves balance and coordination, and strengthens the neural pathways that help children process emotions and adapt to challenges.

Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics and environmental psychologists highlights that children who engage in regular free play in nature show better attention spans, reduced symptoms of ADHD, improved problem-solving abilities, and greater emotional regulation. One landmark study found that just 20 minutes of outdoor play per day can significantly lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) while boosting dopamine and serotonin — the chemicals that support motivation, joy, and calm.

Starting this beautiful Spring, we can make a deliberate decision to shift the default. Instead of screens being the easy go-to after school or on weekends, let’s protect time for outdoor play as a non-negotiable part of our daily rhythm. The results can be remarkable. Many families in our clinic that have made this change say their children argue less, sleep more soundly, show greater creativity, and bounce back from disappointments or even minor injuries with more resilience. They are also building physical confidence and a deep appreciation for the world around them which will serve them for the rest of their life.

Intentional Play

Making the outdoors the default does not mean eliminating screens entirely. It simply means that fresh air, movement, and real-world exploration come first, with technology used more intentionally and in smaller doses.

If we want our children to grow with strong bodies, clear minds, and steady nervous systems, we must give them what they were designed for… time to freely explore and learn. The good news is that it does not require grand adventures or expensive equipment. It only requires our consistent decision to open the door and let them step outside, and even for us to step outside with them.

The question is simple: Will we raise little ones whose life is primarily lived indoors behind a screen, or will we raise children who are truly alive in the beautiful world God created for them?

We believe the second option is worth every bit of effort.
